An exciting training experience as first step towards the final international competition.

From April 15^th to 19^th ten selected students with their teachers spent a training week in the Tuscan Leather District making a real “journey” to discover each aspects of veg-tanned leather process, experience the production practises and learn the different traditional techniques from local master craftsmen. They also had the chance to select materials directly into tanneries to create their collections for the final contest of next Autumn.

Following the success of  last year, Toscana Promozione – Economic Promotion Agency of Tuscany –with the cooperation of the Genuine Italian Vegetable Tanned Leather Consortium organises the second edition of “Craft The Leather”, a training project focused on a group of talented young designers from the most prestigious international fashion and design schools.

Craft The Leather aims to promote the Tuscan Vegetable-Tanned Leather, a high-quality product created by the skilled hands of the Tuscan master tanners, and to increase knowledge of this traditional but also extremely versatile product among the new generation of fashion designers, who will be the stylists of tomorrow.

Ten students, from the most famous international fashion and design schools,  will take part in Craft The Leather 2013:

-           ArtEZ Institute of the Arts, Arnhem – Holland

-           London College of Fashion, London – UK

-           Royal College of Art, London – U.K.

-           Bunka Fashion College, Tokyo – Japan

-           Hiko Mizuno College of Jewelry, Tokyo –Japan

-           Rhode Island School of Design, Providence – USA

-           Fashion Institute of Technology, New York – USA

-           Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hong Kong – China

-           Kookmin University, Seoul – South Korea

-           Domus Academy, Milano – Italy

The project will consist in two main phases: the training workshop, in the week from 15th to 19th April 2013 and the designers’ contest in the next autumn.

During the workshop the group of 10 selected students with their teachers will spend a week in the heart of the Tuscan Leather District exploring each aspect of the veg-tanning process. They will come into contact with various kinds of vegetable-tanned leather, experiencing the production practices and the design creative process, and will select materials directly in the tanneries to be used for the final phase of the project: concept and production of a mini-collection of fashion accessories.

The winner of the competition is going to be declared by a technical jury and rewarded during the final ceremony of Craft The Leather project– Edition 2013, that will take place at an international leather fair next autumn.

Tutor for “Craft The Leather 2013” will be Mrs Diane Ellen Becker.

The Board of Directors of Consorzio Vera Pelle Italiana Conciata al Vegetale/Genuine Italian Vegetable-Tanned Leather Consortium re-elected Simone Remi to the post of Consortium President for the next two years: 2013-2014.

He will be assisted in his mandate by previous Vice Presidents, Massimo Boldrini and Leonardo Volpi.

The annual general meeting of the consortium members held on February 26^th, 2013, also elected the other members of the new Board of Directors: Stefano Casella, Gabriele Colonnata, Andrea Ghizzani, Giuseppe Marzano, Eric Poles, Paolo Quagli, Cherubino Quirici, Martina Squarcini, Paolo Testi.

As Simone Remi states “vegetable-tanning is our distinctive feature, “the difference” that Consortium must get across over and over again in order to support the existence of own members on the market promoting its guarantee Quality Trademark. Aiming to this, we hardly have to work for making know the high value of vegetable-tanned leather. Final consumers should know that buying a product made of our leather means having a unique and exclusive good, as expression of a philosophy and of a lifestyle”.
